SOUTH HADLEY -- After a surprising loss to Taconic earlier in the week, the Mount Greylock wrestling team had a quick turnaround for a difficult task at the South Hadley Duals on Saturday. The results were mixed.
Greylock defeated both South Hadley (42-39) and Dean Tech (48-23), but when it came to top-ranked Wayland, the Mounties' weakness was exposed in a 35-29 loss.
Greylock lost the three lowest weight classes (103, 112, and 119) to open the match in a 17-0 hole. The Mounties tried to climb out and needed a pin and a win in the final two matches to complete the comeback. But a loss at 215 sealed their fate.
Coach Ray Miro pointed to two matches the Mounties won by points as situations where they could have earned another six points. Jay Krutiak (145) and Ross Jackson (160) each won, but couldn't get a pin for the extra points.
Travis Hilchey (125), Josh Hadley (130) and Zach Larabee (140) all won with pins.
Against South Hadley, Sean O'Connor, Hadley, Larabee, Zach Bantle and Colin Dezess all won with pins.
In the Dean Tech match, Hilchey, Hadley, Krutiak, Dylan Walker, Jackson, Bantle and Dezess all had pins.
