A Tragic Loss......


A friend of mine died last night. I still can't figure this out. I awoke as usual and went to check my email and facebook, to see what my friends were up to for the day and I saw that one of them posted that she couldn't stop crying and she needed her Zen girls (that is what our group of friends is called) I thought, oh no! something happened to one of her boys! So I logged on to Zen to find out that "Shimmy" (Traci) was in an accident and was killed. It hurts to even write that out. She was hit by a train, meeting her fiance.........this hurts.....

I have known Shimmy for many years now. We belonged to a meessage board foe wayward "scrapbookers" and we have a tight knit group of girlfriends. We have had our ups and downs with all of us and when one of the boards broke up, she emailed me daily cause she did not want to lose our friendship. We laughed, shared stories of our kids, shared our favorite book and movies and she turned me on to some different music that she thought I would like. We shared pictures of our dogs, shared recipes and just truly liked each other. She called me "OtherBeth" cause there is another girl on the board named Beth and I always loved that nickname <3. Then she left this board for awhile, life gets in the way and other things but then we found her again on facebook. She always had an encouraging word for everyone and i found her to be a very strong and beautiful woman. The kicker......I have never met her in real life. We are an online community of friends who have been thru alot together. Some of us have met, ohters not. But if you ask anyone of us they will say we may even be closer that IRL friends. I love all my girls on Zen and I know we will get thru this. It is going to be so hard but the love we have for one another will get us thru it. Oh, and I never told Shimmy this but one time she called me and I wasn't home, she left me a message and she had the most adorable voice ever! Traci, I will say a prayer for your son and I know you will be looking out for him and helping him thru his pain. You were the best mom and a great friend. I will miss you dearly.

Values and Goals for the Holiday season

So, I'm taking this little online class called "Holidays in Hand" and my first assignment is to write or blog my values and goals for this season. Hmmmm.....this may take a few minutes. I know that one of my goals is to be more organized. I am trying because I have started a shopping list for the family and extended members of the family so that is a start. But I have also been fighting with Christopher because he says it is to early but I want to start shopping, he won't write a list out so a fight ensues.....So I guess that comes to Values. What is more important, trying to have an 11 yr old make a list for Santa (who I think doesn't believe anymore,) or spend time with him talking about the books he loves to read or the games he loves to play. So o.k., I get it. Another is that I am going to try and be more forgiving with family and try to reach out to more family members that we really don't connect with.....I am going to try and remember that the holiday season is for love and peace, not fighting or gossiping about others......

Daycation

Chris and I had a chance to sneak away for an overnight to Mohegan Sun Casino Monday. What a fun 48 hours! We went to Mystic and had a great lunch at the cutest restaurant. I wish I would remember to take pictures...you think I would being obsessed with my camera. I do have a couple but they are crappy. Probably cause I was either drunk or hungover.....But what is a "night of drunken debauchery" if it weren't for those pictures....oh, and to the people in the pool area. I'm sorry I acted like a sex crazed teenager....but boy did I have fun!!!!

Busy weekend

Chris and I celebrated our 12th anniversary this weekend. No, it was not spent in a fancy restaurant, nor on a cruise ship. It was not spent in a luxurious hotel or spa. We spent our anniversary in the quaint city of North Adams but more specifically, in the er at North Adams regional Hospital. There was a man with a nail in his thumb, people coughing everywhere (swine flu mass hysteria) and our favorite little crack head, we'll call her beehive cause that is the only way I can desribe her hairdo. I have to say she did keep us entertained. But seriously, Christopher got hurt in a football game so as a precaution we took him in. He is fine and we have piece of mind. Although I probably could have saved us 3 hours cause when we walked out of the game, he wanted pizza. I don't think that people with head trauma usually ask for pizza on the way to the er......just saying.....

What the hell, it was cheap and we had a feeling I would fail anyway but we said let's DO IT (in Ben Stillers Starsky voice, if you haven't seen Starsky and Hutch, rent it....). And Looky what "mamma" has created!! And I might add it was delish on our famous Chicken Nachos!

We also took the boat out to Cheshire Lake, I love that it is 5 minutes from the house but I hate that there is tons of weeds and Christopher had a leech on his leg! AAAAHHHHGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!! A little blood for a good time is worth it huh?

So, we recently sold our Pirate ship and we didn't know what to do with the space it was in. Well, we are turning it into a fire pit. We have no furniture as of yet but we had our first run at a bonfire and smores last night! And guess who fell asleep by the fire...yup, me....it was nice while it lasted......

Yummy!


Chris went fishing the other night and the kids and I were bored so Sam helped me make these "pudding Cookies". He chose to put in the white chocolate chips. They were yummy but a little on the sweet side, but I say what the hell, a cookie needs a little "sweet".....and I also "halved" the recipe cause I like a good cookie but my body, not so much..........

Ingredients:
4 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
2 t. baking soda
1-1/2 c butter (3 sticks) softened
1-1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
1/2 c. white sugar
2 (3.4 oz.) pkgs. instant vanilla pudding
4 eggs, room temp
2 t. vanilla extract
4 c. of add-ins you want to use like chocolate/butterscotch/peanut butter/white chocolate chips, candy bars, m&m's, nuts, etc.



Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Stir together flour and baking soda in seperate bowl and set aside; in a large bowl, cream butter, brown and white sugar. Beat in pudding mix until well blended. Stir in the eggs and vanilla. When smooth, slowly add in the flour mixture. This can take a little while, but make sure it's well incorporated into mix.

Finally, add the "fillers". Make 1 inch balls. Line your cookie sheets with parchment paper and bake for 8-12 minutes or until golden.

Makes about 8 dozen

Our Terrible, Horrible, no Good, very bad Vacation

This may not seem like big deal things but when they all come together in a 72 hour period, it is stressful (especially with a 16,10 and 8 year olds... )

Let's see......we booked the hotel specifically for a pool for the boys, we get there, pool closed for renovations. We asked for a cot at 1:30pm because there are 5 of us, we got it at 12:00am. There was noone in the room next to us, yet the alarm went off at 5:00 am every morning and it was LOUD! The toilet got plugged up and almost overflowed and... we had to have a man come up and fix it. And the maid left us one bath towel, again, there are 5 of us Not to mention the traffic and we kept getting lost...fun times!! NOT! There were some highlights like the Duck tour was fun and the waitress at Dick's......Let's just say I was never happier to leave a hotel or city in my life!!!

Oh and Zak won his first match on Friday at the BayState Games for wrestling but it was downhill after that.

As a friend of mine said, if you were looking at the pictures, we looked like we had a good time, but looks are deceiving.....but we do laugh. Now.

Drivers Ed and Weigh in

Zak had his big weigh in for the Bay State Games last night. He had signed up for the 130lb. weight class and when he did that he was 142! He trained very hard and at the final hour weighed in at 129.1!! Then Chris took him and the boys to Old Country Buffet YUCK! I hope he feels ok today :)

While they were weighing in I had to attend a 2 hour long Parent Driving class. Did I mention it was 2 hours long? All about insurance, responsibility, and things I already know. . So by October I will have a driver in my house...breathe..........

Off to Boston....keep fingers crossed that Zak will do well!

It was a busy weekend. Chris took Friday off and we did some errands and whatnots...and Saturday was the windiest 4th of July I have ever seen! We spent the day at Onata Lake spending most of the day huddled under blankets LOL! It was fun and we got a few boat rides in and dished with family......

Happy Day One, Chris!

Today, June 18th is the first day I met Chris back in 1996. I was working at The Freight Yard and my friend Cindy was dating the bartender, Jimmy and he played softball for Chris on his team. We were going to go to a game and they were going to introduce us after, but noone told Jimmy the game was cancelled. So we were drinking at The Legion and Jimmy called Chris and told him to come down and meet me. We have been together ever since! Happy Day One honey, I love you!

GRRRRR!

I kept my kids home from school today. They have spent all year getting ready for a "school wide CIRCUS". Now this is in lieu of a school play that only costs a couple of hundred of dollars and parents were welcome to see it. I found out that this "circus' costs a couple thousand, not open to the public, only wanted parents to line the street for the morning parade. The parade was cancelled yesterday because of impending rain today so not only did parents reschedule their day for the parade, now they will see nothing! I volunteered to work the Midway a couple of months ago cause I knew it was closed to parents and this way I could see it. I was told Tuesday that Volunteers were no longer needed!

As a side note, our Principal is retiring and the kids are supposed to sing her a song today. I think this whole thing was arranged as a going away party for herself. Sam told me the other day he "was going to lipsync cause I don't like her." So I made a parental decision and kept them home. Oh and Christopher was supposed to wear a red t-shirt, Sam a white tank top. But other classes are getting full makeup for the clowns and other things. Where did this money go? And to make matters worse, Every year the 4th grade gets to go to Ellis Island. It is like a right of passage for the kids. They all look forward to it. Not this year. We were told there was no money. Sunday, one of the 4th grade teachers told me they were just told that there was $30,000 in the student activity fund. But alas, do you think the teachers stood up for our kids and made a last minute decision to take the kids quickly. No.

I'm sorry this has gotten long. I am so frustrated. I thought about going in and talking to them but you have no idea about this town. My voice would be wasted on deaf ears.

Well, I just got the first 2 episodes thru Netflix and let me just say, very interesting.....It has the potential for a great series but some of the sex scenes....I'm not a prude by any means, but I was a little nervous someone was going to hear all the moaning and yelling through my windows! GASP!!!! LOL!!! I'm going to get some more episodes to see if it keeps me hanging. But my true love ARMY WIVES, second season comes out today!! Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!

CHESHIRE -- After watching its starting pitcher get shelled with back-to-back doubles to start the game and five runs in the first three innings, the Hoosac Valley baseball team could have fallen apart.
After stranding runners in every inning and managing just three runs through six, the Hurricanes could have packed it in.
After putting two men on and watching their No. 3 and 4 hitters retired in the bottom of the seventh, Hoosac could have lost hope.
But in Saturday’s Western Massachusetts Division 2 tournament opener, the ‘Canes would not quit.
Josh Gould and Nick Bourdon delivered back-to-back singles to cap a three-run rally that gave Hoosac a 6-5 win over South Hadley and a berth into today’s quarterfinal round -- they play at No. 2 Belchertown at 4 p.m.
Bourdon, who started the day with three strikeouts at the plate, epitomized his team’s perseverance. He belted an 0-1 offering from reliever Paul Ciolek through a hole on the left side of the infield to plate Gould and Jake Wilk.
"I was just thinking fastball because the tying run was on third," Bourdon said. "He gave me a fastball down the middle, and I just went with it.
"I didn’t do too good against the lefty."
South Hadley southpaw Sean Sullivan scattered nine hits and allowed just two earned runs while striking out 11 (including Bourdon three times) in six innings.
But Bourdon said the Hurricanes (13-8)never allowed their frustration to get the better of them. "We never gave up," he said. "We knew we could come back all the time. We just knew we’d get some luck with the bad hops and stuff."
Hoosac Valley was due for some luck.
South Hadley (6-15) capitalized on two bad hops past Hurricanes shortstop Danny Barrett to manufacture its fifth run in the top of the third.
Barrett ended up factoring heavily into Hoosac’s dramatic seventh-inning rally.
Leadoff man Zach Larabee got things started with a chopper down the first-base line that went for a double. Barrett then followed with a walk to get the tying run aboard with nobody out.
But Ciolek settled down to get Dalton Larabee swinging on a 3-2 pitch and Garrett Alibozek to ground back to the pitcher for a fielder’s choice.
Wilk came on as a pinch-runner for Alibozek, and Gould stepped into the box having already gone 2-for-3 with a double against Sullivan.
On the second pitch to Gould, South Hadley catcher Pat Dragon attempted to catch Barrett napping, but Dragon’s throw was off the mark, and Barrett took third.
Gould worked a full count before sending his third hit of the day into right field. Barrett scored easily, Wilk went from first to third, and Gould alertly took second base on a bad throw in from the outfield, putting two runners in scoring position for Bourdon.
"I honestly felt we were in great shape [going to the seventh] because my starting pitcher pitched an awesome game, but his pitch count was up around 120, and we were kind of using smoke and mirrors the last two innings just to get him through it," South Hadley coach Matt Foley said. "Then the guy I brought in is the guy who has been our No. 1 for a year. He got a little riled there. That first base hit [by Zach Larabee], I think screwed him up a little bit mentally.
"When we made that play at third, I thought we were in pretty good shape at that point because I could see in his eyes it settled him down a little bit."
That play also easily could have taken the wind out of the Hurricanes’ sails.
"In the seventh, the two guys in the middle of the lineup make outs with people on base, and you start thinking, ‘maybe it’s not going to happen,’ " Hoosac coach Bob Rivard said. "But Gould had a bit hit, and Bourdon had a bit hit. ... Gould played a tremendous game all the way around. He had three hits, he knocked in a couple of runs, he scored a couple of runs and he played great defense."
Gould turned in the defensive highlight for Hoosac Valley in the top of the fourth when he ranged well into foul territory to get the second out for Dalton Larabee.
As it turned out, the play helped Hoosac’s starter record the first of four straight scoreless innings after he surrendered at least a run in each of the first three.
"I think he might have been too strong [early]," Rivard said of his right-hander. "I think his curve was up a little bit the first couple of innings, and he didn’t locate his fastball.
"But I felt later on, he had some good pop. I think he had some gas that he had early in the season that he didn’t find [again] until late."
Larabee struck out seven, walked five and allowed 10 hits in the complete-game win. But he faced just two hitters over the minimum and allowed only two hits after the third.
His initial run support came in the second when Gould doubled to left and moved up on a bobble in the outfield before coming home on Corey Meczywor’s infield single. Meczywor went to second on an error and came home on Justin Pelczynski’s single to right to make it 4-2.
After South Hadley added a bounce-aided run in the third, Hoosac got one back when Dalton Larabee walked, moved up on an Alibozek single and scored on Gould’s second hit of the day.
Hoosac, which won the Western Mass tourney a year ago after also finishing the regular season 12-8, will look to keep this year’s tournament run alive today at second-seeded Belchertown (11-9), a team that split with South Hadley in the regular season by scores of 9-0 and 4-13.
One thing is certain: The Hurricanes will not stop fighting.
"I knew it wasn’t over," South Hadley’s Foley said. "Bob’s a great coach, and they’re a good team. They didn’t get to where they are at this point by being a bad team.
"We wish them well. We’ve always enjoyed playing Hoosac. We’ve probably played them a half dozen times in the last 12 years, and we’ve always respected them. I wish them well. I hope they have a nice run in the tournament."

Busy week

What a week! Sam stayed home Monday from school cause I think he had a chocolate hangover from Rylin's Christening on Sunday. Then Tuesday, Christopher came home with an earache, so a quick trip to the doctor and sur' nuf, he has an ear infection! So come Thursday, Sam goes in for his "oral surgery". He had to have a tooth removed cause it wouldn't come out on its own and the dentist thought it might get infected. There is nothing funnier than a doped up 8 year old! The poor kid was so out of it. He kinda looked like me at the last wedding we attended. LOL! Then on to Friday. Christopher is a reporter for the KIDZCONNEXION and his second assignment was to go to the Springfield Museum and report on his day. We had a great time. They took us in to see "Grossology" that isn't opening until today and that made him feel like a hotshot!! We went to lunch at Red Robin...Yummmmm (are you singing the song in your head right now?) and then a quick trip to none other that Barnes and Noble! Christopher shares my passion for the written word.......

We then came home long enogh to change and then run off to Pownal VT. for a Wood Bat Classic game. Some of the 10 year olds got called up being that this is a Holiday weekend and some people go on what is that word? Oh yea, Family vacations! I forgot since it has been so long since I have been on one! Anyway, Christopher made an AWESOME catch and he just floated off the field, I was so proud!!

So they are off already for another game this morning and Zak has one this afternoon. We are also trying to oen the pool, always a pain in the ass, and hopefully get in some boating this weekend.

Surgery

Why does this word make the strongest of people go weak, the weakest of people fall apart...the word itself is dreary, scary, devastating, thought provoking. Yes, that is it, Thought provoking! Because Chris had surgery on Friday and it certainly provoked the worst of thoughts from me. You always hear horrror stories about surgeries gone wrong, people dying, ending up in a coma, etc....and I do have quite the imaginative mind so it was thinking all these things! But the one thought that came through loud and clear is that I know I couldn't go on without Chris. I am not this strong person that everyone thinks I am. So, I'm not a woman of many words but I guess this is my love letter to Chris. I would die without you, wither away and become nothing. I love you. Just remember that.

Oh and it was just knee surgery but when you sit in the waiting room for 3 hours drinking iced coffee, it may as well have been a heart transplant. Note to self, no caffine next surgery...

New America Ferrera film looks at effects of war .

MEXICO CITY – "Ugly Betty" star America Ferrera is hoping her new film will inspire Americans to address the struggles soldiers face after they come home from Iraq or Afghanistan.
The 25-year-old is starring and producing "The Dry Land," which follows a young man's difficulties readapting to small town life following a tour of duty.
Ferrera says the United States "should have an honest discussion about the effects that war has on our society, on the men who come back, on the families that are broken from it."
She said Friday in a phone interview she hopes the film ignites such discussion.
Ryan O'Nan and Melisa Leo also star in the movie, which was written and directed by Ferrera's beau, Ryan Piers Williams

Lipstick in School


According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem.
A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom.
That was fine, but after they put on their lip stick, they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.
Every night the maintenance man would remove them, and the next day the girls would put them back.
Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man.
She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night .
To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required.
He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

Baseball Hall Of Fame







So, over school vacation we like to do Day trips because w/ baseball and everything we can't have a family vacation (insert violin playing). So we went to the BHOF in Cooperstown NY. What a pretty little town! We had fun, learned some new fact and we saw Curt Shilling's Bloody sock!! YEA!!!! We had a good lunch, thanks to Christopher :) and had a full bottle of ketchup!! (family joke! HaHa!!)

Update on Ashton Kutcher & CNN

Not again....

Chris, Zak and Christopher left early this morning for a wrestling tournament so it is just me,Sammy and Jackie. Jackson got off the bed and headed to the living room and all of a sudden we heard a huge "THUD". I ran out there and he was laying on top of all the shoes. He must have passed out and it was all I could do to call Chris. I sat with him for a few minutes and took him outside to get some fresh air and he seems ok now. He ate his breakfast and took his pills. I had a heart to heart chat with him too and told him that I was not ready for anything to happen to him so he better respect his mother's wish!

So if you have a minute, please say a prayer for Jackson. He is so much more to us than just a dog. He is our son, brother and best friend......

Long week....

My days are always messed up when there is a weekday holiday. The kids didn't have school yesterday because it was Good Friday and now I don't know what day it is or where I'm supposed to be!! Zak had 2 baseball games this week. They won against Drury and lost to Taconic. Easter is tomorrow then one week of school and then April vacation, kinda dreading that! LOL!

Christopher was asked to be a reporter for a group called The Kids Connexion. His teacher picked him out of all the 4th graders and this is the first article he wrote. ( I'm still beaming!)

Cheshire school rocks!

Cheshire School is an amazing place. It is an excellent school to go to. Cheshire School is located in Cheshire, Massachusetts. Cheshire is a small town in the Berkshires. There are two hundred forty students in the whole school. It has prekindergarten to grade six. Everyone knows each other. We have many great programs here like, the O Ambassador program, the Greenhouse Club, Lego Club, and Kids Cook.

In the O Ambassadors Club we raise money for East Africa. The money we raise goes to a school in Kenya. The money supplies clean drinking water as well as supplies for their school. We have raised over two thousand dollars so far this year. Our school was picked by Oprah Winfrey to join the program after our principal, Mrs. St. John filled out an application and wrote an essay about Cheshire School. The thirty students that are in the club were picked by the teachers. Every teacher in the school sent names of the students that they thought would be good candidates. The names were put in a basket and thirty names were chosen.

In the spring we have a greenhouse club. We have a greenhouse in the back of the school that the students can plant plants for their gardens. The club meets once a week. Students in grades four, five and six are allowed to be in the club.

My favorite club is Lego club. In Lego Club kids work together in groups of two or three to create a Lego set. When the sets are complete we will auction them off to buy more Lego sets. My group is working on a Lego castle. It is difficult but FUN!

Another group our school has is, Kids Cook. It is a cooking show that is filmed at a local restaurant. Students In grades four, five, and six can sign up to participate. They go to the Basswater Grill where the chef teaches them how to cook various things. It is filmed by a parent who was trained by the local T.V. station. The program is then aired on television for everyone to see. The students that go really enjoy it, I think they like eating the food the best!

Our school is a great school because we have clubs and groups to join. The teachers are also nice. Everyone gets along with each other. It is a good place to be.

Chris and I thought it would be fun to put your good vocabulary to use and start a drinking game. Everytime BO says UH, take a drink. Three minutes into the game we could not breathe. We had to put the glasses down away from our mouths. So please, for the sake of our livers, no more UH's.

This has been a "crap" week. Christopher is still sick. They did a Flu and Strep test on him today and those were negative. They ruled out appendicitis (sp) and pnemonia so if his stomach ache continues, they will do X-rays. So hopefully it is just that stupid virus hanging on......so, needless to say, I have been crabby. Out of the ashes.....


There have been horrible fires in Australia this week. Over 180 people are dead and they believe the majority of the fires were started by an arson. This is so incredibly sad.....and they showed this story on the Today Show this morning. Sam, the Koala bear, with her burned little feet accepting water from a firefighter and giving thanks by giving him her paw. So touching.......

Too much.....

My week began with waking up on Monday with a sore throat, no biggie, I sucked on a throat lozenge and went on my merry way. By 8:00 I was falling hard into a coma of runny /stuffy (make up your mind!) nose, headache and watery eyes. OK, I can deal...then my son comes home from a basketball game with a gash on his head the size of a meat Cleaver and looking like Rocky Balboa. He was in a fight. With a kid who is a Boxer. Nice. 4 stitches and a catscan later all I wanted was a glass of wine. But kids, here's the upside, I didn't have one!! LOL! So all day yesterday was spent in bed dealing with the disappointment I feel for Zak and the pain that is throbbing in my head! I get thru yesterday and now today.....a snow day. The kids are home and I'm only feeling 30% better. I must be paying for a whole lot of sins in my past........

Letter from Daughters to Daughters

*I found this article on a website I visit, there was a link to The Wall Street Journal website. But I found this touching and I admit, I wasn't that into the inauguration yesterday but once I turned it on, I found myself choking up and weeping in some parts. I know it is a Historical Day. I know I just became part of that history. And I couldn't be happier that the "color barrier" has been broken. I admit I didn't vote for B. Obama, but I am giving him all my respect and best wishes for getting this country back to our "happy place". So read this letter from Daughters of a President to the daughters of our new President.........

Sasha and Malia, we were seven when our beloved grandfather was sworn in as the 41st President of the United States. We stood proudly on the platform, our tiny hands icicles, as we lived history. We listened intently to the words spoken on Inauguration Day service, duty, honor. But being seven, we didn't quite understand the gravity of the position our Grandfather was committing to. We watched as the bands marched by -- the red, white, and blue streamers welcoming us to a new role: the family members of a President.

We also first saw the White House through the innocent, optimistic eyes of children. We stood on the North Lawn gazing with wonder at her grand portico. The White House was alive with devoted and loving people, many of whom had worked in her halls for decades. Three of the White House ushers, Buddy, Ramsey, and "Smiley", greeted us when we stepped into her intimidating hallway. Their laughter and embraces made us feel welcome right away. Sasha and Malia, here is some advice to you from two sisters who have stood where you will stand and who have lived where you will live:

-- Surround yourself with loyal friends. They'll protect and calm you and join in on some of the fun, and appreciate the history.

-- If you're traveling with your parents over Halloween, don't let it stop you from doing what you would normally do. Dress up in some imaginative, elaborate costume (if you are like us a pack of Juicy Fruit and a Vampiress) and trick-or-treat down the plane aisle.

-- If you ever need a hug, go find Ramsey. If you want to talk football, look for Buddy. And, if you just need a smile, look for "Smiley."

-- And, a note on White House puppies--our sweet puppy Spot was nursed on the lawn of the White House. And then of course, there's Barney, who most recently bit a reporter. Cherish your animals because sometimes you'll need the quiet comfort that only animals can provide.

-- Slide down the banister of the solarium, go to T-ball games, have swimming parties, and play Sardines on the White House lawn. Have fun and enjoy your childhood in such a magical place to live and play.

-- When your dad throws out the first pitch for the Yankees, go to the game.

-- In fact, go to anything and everything you possibly can: the Kennedy Center for theater, State Dinners, Christmas parties (the White House staff party is our favorite!), museum openings, arrival ceremonies, and walks around the monuments. Just go. Four years goes by so fast, so absorb it all, enjoy it all!

For four years, we spent our childhood holidays and vacations in the historic house. We could almost feel the presence of all the great men and women who had lived here before us. When we played house, we sat behind the East sitting room's massive curtains as the light poured in illuminating her yellow walls. Our seven-year-old imaginations soared as we played in the enormous, beautiful rooms; our dreams, our games, as romantic as her surroundings. At night, the house sang us quiet songs through the chimneys as we fell asleep.



Personal Life In late December, when snow blanketed the front lawn, all of our cousins overtook the White House. Thirteen children between the ages of two and 12 ran throughout her halls, energized by the crispness in the air and the spirit of the season. Every room smelled of pine; the entire house was adorned with thistle; garlands wound around every banister. We sat on her grand staircase and spied on the holiday dancing below. Hours were spent playing hide-and-go-seek. We used a stage in the grand ballroom to produce a play about Santa and his reindeer. We watched as the National Christmas Tree was lit and admired the chef as he put the final icing on the gingerbread house.

When it was time, we left the White House. We said our goodbyes to her and to Washington. We weren't sure if we would spend time among her historical walls again, or ever walk the National Mall, admiring the cherry blossoms that resembled puffs of cotton candy. But we did return. This time we were 18. The White House welcomed us back and there is no doubt that it is a magical place at any age.

As older girls, we were constantly inspired by the amazing people we met, politicians and great philosophers like Vaclav Havel. We dined with royalty, heads of states, authors, and activists. We even met the Queen of England and managed to see the Texas Longhorns after they won the National Championship. We traveled with our parents to foreign lands and were deeply moved by what we saw. Trips to Africa inspired and motivated us to begin working with HIV/AIDS and the rights of women and children all over the world.

Now, the White House ballrooms were filled with energy and music as we danced. The East sitting room became a peaceful place to read and study. We ran on the track in the front lawn, and squared off in sisterly bowling duels down in the basement alley.

This Christmas, with the enchanting smell of the holidays encompassing her halls, we will again be saying our good-byes to the White House. Sasha and Malia, it is your turn now to fill the White House with laughter.

And finally, although it's an honor and full of so many extraordinary opportunities, it isn't always easy being a member of the club you are about to join. Our dad, like yours, is a man of great integrity and love; a man who always put us first. We still see him now as we did when we were seven: as our loving daddy. Our Dad, who read to us nightly, taught us how to score tedious baseball games. He is our father, not the sketch in a paper or part of a skit on TV. Many people will think they know him, but they have no idea how he felt the day you were born, the pride he felt on your first day of school, or how much you both love being his daughters. So here is our most important piece of advice: remember who your dad really is.

Snow day

Another beautiful day here in New England. Snow, sleet, schools closed, dark and damp. Actually, these are my favorite kind of days (minus the school closings.) I use it to excuse myself from any house work, lay around all day and catch up on my guilty pleasure (Ugly Betty, God I love that show!), make brownies, or since I'm on a diet now (PARTY POOPER)I think I will make some hummus.......or not.

I think Mom and Dad and Ned are coming over for dinner, if the roads are ok later. Ned is home cause he has an interview in Ct. I hope he left early enough.....off to prep the shrimp, quickly cause Betty is waiting........

Happy New Year!!!!

Well, we made it thru another year and ended on a doozy of a day. Zak had his surgery on his elbow. It was a long day but he sailed thru with flying colors!! And the funniest (and best of the day......I have an obsession with Hospital socks. Chris got me a pair to add to my collection!) And they are a nice shade of gray. This has been a running joke for Chris and I for years and when he opened the closet in Zak's room, there they were! See, my hubby will do anything for me!!! LOL!

I don't know if I told you about Zak's elbow, but he got hit, by my nephew no less, with a football helmet right to the elbow. He was out for the last 4 weeks of football and we have been seeing a orthopedic specialist. He told Zak on Thursday that he will give him the ok to wrestle but will probably need surgery in the spring. He has nerve damage. So Zak said ok cause wrestling is his favorite and he was so excited. But the Doctor also said if he was a betting man he wouldn't make it thru the season.

Jump ahead to Saturday. They had there first meet with 8 different schools. It was exciting! The one girl on their team pinned a guy and the place erupted!!!! My throat hurt from cheering

So I had to leave to work at Dad's store and Chris had to bring the other boys to their Basketball game. I get a phone call at 4:00 at the store and hear this soft voice say "Is Beth there"? I said Zak , it's me and he starts Bawling!!!!!!! He got hurt bad, his elbow, and it was awful. My heart was ripped from my chest to hear him like that I flew over to the school and brought him to the ER. I'm waiting right now to call his doctor to set up for surgery cause he is done for the season.

Sorry I went on so long. I didn't let out my feelings in front of him so I think they are all coming out today. He is crushed and I feel so bad for him.......

Thanksgiving Forecast

Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 190F. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder.

During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation of one to two inches on plates. Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other. Please pass the gravy.

A weight watch and indigestion warning have been issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper off to leftovers, dropping to a low of 34F in the refrigerator.

Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, high pressure to eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50 percent chance of scattered soup late in the day. We expect a warming trend where soup develops. By early next week, eating pressure will be low as the only wish left will be the bone.

A young and successful
executive was traveling down a neighborhood street,
going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was
watching for kids darting out from between parked
cars and slowed down when he thought he saw
something. As his car passed, no children appeared.
Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door!
He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to
the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry
driver then jumped out of the
car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up
against a parked car shouting,
'What was that all about and who are you? Just what
the heck are you doing? That's a new car and that
brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why
did you do it?' The young boy was apologetic.
'Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't
know what else to do,' He pleaded. 'I threw the
brick because no one else would stop...' With tears
dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth
pointed to a spot just around a parked car. 'It's my
brother, 'he said 'He rolled off the curb and fell
out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him
up.'

Now sobbing, the boy
asked the stunned executive, 'Would you please help
me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and
he's too heavy for me.
Moved beyond words,
the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling
lump in his throat He hurriedly lifted the
handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took
out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh
scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything
was going to be okay. 'Thank you and may God bless
you,' the grateful child told the stranger. Too
shook up for words, the man simply watch ed the boy!
push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk
toward their home.


It was a long, slow
walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very
noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair
the dented side door. He kept the dent there to
remind him of this message: 'Don't go through life
so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to
get your attention!' God whispers in our souls and
speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don't have
time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us. It's
our choice to listen or
not.

Busy week

It has been busy around here. Between doctor's appointments, both Christopher and Zak and Zak's was awful. Seems during a practice at football he got a helmet to the elbow and now he has a "dislocated nerve" That is not the proper term for it but for the life of me I cannot translate what the Dr. told me. It sounds like this....jnnvjisiufhwkjerf;efgh;e. Get the picture? So he is done with football for the season, the big game is today, should be interesting.....and he will probably be out of wrestling for the first couple of weeks. Poor kid, he is heartbroken.
So hopefully the next weeks will be better.....

Why is it so hard to say Thank You? Chris and I have been working the gate at the High School football games all season, I have been taking pictures so the kids can have a video at the end of the year, I also took Senior Day pictures cause the president of the booster club forgot to get a photographer. I showed her the pictures last night and do you think I got a thank you? Hell no. Sometimes I just want to grab that woman by the throat and throttle her!

I'm calling Oprah and starting a campaign, "Just say Thanks". It's cheaper and easier than paying me, right?

From my favorite farm from up the road

Anniversary weekend



Chris and I celebrated 11 years of married life this past Saturday. We went to the Norman Rockwell musuem on Friday. We both love him and we collect NR figurines and we weren't disapointed. Well, except for the fact that he may have been a fraud. There was a picture of NR and his son and it looked like a homecoming from College, you know, the hugs, smiles and all the warm fuzzies you get. Well in the description of the picture the son said that his father always looked for these settings so he could paint these homecomings but they never happened in their life. I was crushed. Then it was said that they liked to go to California for the winter cause they didn't like the harsh winters in Vermont. Crushed again. I have to say, I was a little depressed on the way to Mohegan Sun, were we spent the night gambling. So add to my depression we won no money. We are lucky that we are still in love!!! Oh and the salad I had at Michael Jordan"s Sports cafe made these last 11 years all worth it!! It was the BEST salad I have ever had! Oh and Chris, you know I'm teasing.......

Poor Chris. He was selected to be on a panel for a rape trial. As much as he likes the Justice system (that is a dig) he really does enjoy Criminal Law. But I think he would much rather be in his "big truck" on a tow...hee hee. On the plus side, I get to meet him for lunch today so I think it works out just fine......

STITCHER" AND PUT DOWN IT WAS LISTED AS UNSKILLED LABOR, SO SHE PUT HIM DOWN FOR $300 A WEEK UNEMPLOYMENT PAY.

Beloved sitcom I Love Lucy airs its last episode. The show, created by Lucille Ball and her husband Desi Arnaz, ran for 10 years. Ball, a former Hollywood starlet and radio actress, had insisted that Arnaz be cast as her husband on I Love Lucy despite the fact that network executives insisted no one would believe a white American actress would be married to a Cuban bandleader. Desi and Lucy filmed a pilot before a live audience to convince network executives that audiences responded well to their act, and CBS agreed to cast Desi for the show.

Another crazy dream last night. I don't know what it is but ever since it has been getting colder outside, I have been having crazy dreams! I really liked this one so I think it is why I remembered it! John Mayer and I were dating, I had Christopher but Chris wasn't in the dream at all. That is ok, John was good with Christopher and he was buying me jewelry and romancing me...swoon....but, we were living in a college dorm and the bathroom was disgusting. What does this say about me?

Finishing up our work at a trade show in San Diego, my co-worker Maureen and I decided to go sightseeing across the border in Tijuana, Mexico.
While there, we went shopping and bought a few pieces of clay kitchenware.
As we crossed back into the United States, a customs official asked if we had anything of value to report.
"Not really," Maureen replied, digging in her bag for the bean crock she had purchased. Everyone around us froze as she continued, "I only bought a little pot."

Long Labor Day weekend




Well, our summer has officially ended. Today will be spent filling up backpacks with back to school supplies (bought in a hurry last night, it always sneaks up on us!!) The Brazilians boarded the big plane last night and are on their way home. We went over Sunday to say goodbye and as usual, I choked up. I will miss those girls!!!




Yesterday, we had the Fooball Jamboree. It was held in North Adams this year and it went well. Sam got to be Quarterback and to my surprise he wasn't bad! When we got back home we went fishing on the boat for a little while and took Jackson out on his "Maiden Voyage". He was doing great up until we were docking the boat to get the car, he must have got nervous and peed on the boat. Oh well, what's a little urine between family!!!!!

Dad scored some tickets Saturday so Christopher and I went to a very late game on Sunday! We had a great time despite the traffic, rain and thoughts of them cancelling the game! We left at 2:50 pm and got home at 3:am. So yes, it was a full and long day but well worth it! They won!!!!
